A new record in energy trade between Mexico and the United States was seen in 2022, reaching a total of $81.9 billion, according to the EIA.
This amount is the sum of imports and exports of energy between the two countries, including crude oil, petroleum products, and natural gas.
This value depends on both the prices of raw materials and the volumes of imported and exported goods. According to the United States Census Bureau, the country bought $55.8 billion from Mexico in 2022, surpassing the $45.4 billion recorded in 2021.
Oil and byproducts:
Crude oil: In 2022, in addition to an increase in the number of barrels of crude oil imported from Mexico to the United States, the price per barrel also rose. Therefore, the 536,000 barrels per day, which represented a 9% increase from 2021, accounted for a total of $20.7 billion. Mexico did not import crude oil last year.
Petroleum products: Almost 20% of all petroleum products from the United States were exported to Mexico, making it a significant market for Americans. The value of exports of these products increased to $44.2 billion in 2022 compared to $33.5 billion in 2021.
Natural Gas: The United States exports natural gas to Mexico through pipelines. In 2022, 5,700 million cubic feet per day were exported, which was 4% less than the previous year (2021).
