Expanded Pipelines Boosted U.S. Natural Gas Supply in 2024

American Mud Pumps

The U.S. natural gas industry experienced a significant shift in 2024, driven by new pipeline infrastructure that reshaped extraction and distribution across key producing regions.

That year, over 17.8 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d) of additional pipeline capacity came online, streamlining the flow of natural gas from production basins to refineries, industrial centers, and liquefied natural gas (LNG) export terminals, according to EIA.

Boosting extraction: key pipeline projects

At the heart of this expansion are pipelines that increase extraction capacity in major production regions, ensuring a steady and efficient supply of natural gas to high-demand areas.

Mountain Valley Pipeline: A game-changer for the Appalachian Basin, this pipeline, operated by Equitrans Midstream Corporation, now moves 2 Bcf/d from West Virginia to Virginia, linking with Transco's pipeline network.

Regional Energy Access Project: Strengthening northeastern gas supply, this 0.8 Bcf/d expansion of Transco's infrastructure enhances connectivity between Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

LEAP Phase 3: Haynesville's gas production now benefits from DT Midstream's expansion, increasing capacity by 0.2 Bcf/d and reinforcing Louisiana’s role as an energy hub.

Matterhorn Express Pipeline: A critical route for Permian Basin gas, this project, led by Whitewater Midstream, delivers 2.5 Bcf/d to markets in Katy, Texas, bolstering Gulf Coast supply chains.

Verde Pipeline: EOG Resources’ 1 Bcf/d Verde Pipeline connects Texas’ Eagle Ford region to the Agua Dulce hub, ensuring stable supply for regional industries.

Feeding LNG exports: pipelines powering global trade

With LNG exports driving U.S. energy strategy, several new pipelines are designed to feed Gulf Coast export terminals, solidifying the country’s position as a key global supplier.

A changing landscape: interstate vs. intrastate growth

The 2024 pipeline expansion outpaced previous years, with interstate projects—those crossing state lines or feeding export markets—surpassing domestic intrastate additions.

These projects ensure a more resilient and flexible supply chain, reducing bottlenecks and optimizing distribution networks.

With demand for LNG exports surging, these infrastructure improvements position the U.S. to capitalize on global energy needs, while also enhancing domestic reliability

The 2024 pipeline boom isn't just about capacity—it's about efficiency, market strength, and the strategic expansion of U.S. energy dominance.
