Plaquemines LNG boosts U.S. exports with first shipment

The United States continues to expand its presence in the global liquefied natural gas (LNG) market with the launch of its eighth LNG export terminal, Plaquemines LNG

On December 26, 2024, this terminal shipped its first cargo, marking a significant step forward for the U.S. energy industry.

The facility began producing LNG in mid-December, joining another major development this year, the Corpus Christi Stage 3 expansion, according to EIA.

Innovative technology for faster construction

What sets Plaquemines LNG apart is its use of mid-scale liquefaction technology, designed for faster construction timelines.

Built by Venture Global LNG, the terminal will be developed in two phases, each containing nine blocks with two liquefaction units per block.

Once fully operational, Plaquemines LNG will boast a nameplate capacity of 2.6 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d) and a peak capacity of 3.2 Bcf/d

These figures represent the amount of LNG the facility can produce under standard and optimal conditions, respectively.

Rapid construction timeline

The first shipment of LNG from Phase 1 was achieved just 30 months after Venture Global's final investment decision, highlighting the efficiency of its construction process.

This timeline mirrors the success of Calcasieu Pass LNG, another Venture Global project and the fastest-built LNG export facility in the U.S.

Future expansion plans

Plaquemines LNG’s Phase 2 is scheduled to begin exports by September 2025.

Upon completion, it will significantly boost the U.S.'s LNG production capacity, aligning with other major projects like Corpus Christi Stage 3, Golden Pass LNG, Rio Grande LNG, and Port Arthur LNG.

By 2028, the U.S. could reach a total LNG export capacity of 21.2 Bcf/d (25.2 Bcf/d at peak), solidifying its role as a global leader in LNG exports.

Meeting global energy demands

This expansion is not only a testament to engineering and logistical advancements but also a key contributor to meeting growing energy demands worldwide.

From drillers to decision-makers, this milestone showcases the power of innovation and investment in shaping the future of the energy industry.
