The U.S. petroleum liquids pipeline network has seen notable expansion since 2023, with the completion of four key pipeline projects, including three crude oil pipelines and one for hydrocarbon gas liquids (HGL).
According to the most recent data from the updated Liquids Pipeline Projects Database from the EIA , these projects mark important progress for the industry.
Interestingly, no new petroleum product pipelines (those transporting gasoline, diesel, or jet fuel) have been completed during this period.
The new pipeline projects include:
South Bend pipeline
Completed in 2023, this 137-mile pipeline developed by Bridger Pipeline, LLC, has a capacity of 150,000 barrels per day (b/d).
It transports crude oil from Johnsons Corner, North Dakota, to Baker, Montana, boosting the region’s crude oil infrastructure.
Keystone Port Neches Link
A major addition to Texas’s oil transport network, this 630,000 b/d pipeline, completed in 2023, is operated by Port Neches Link, LLC, a joint venture between TC Energy and Motiva Enterprises.
The five-mile pipeline connects the Sunoco Logistics terminal in Nederland to the Motiva terminal in Port Neches, featuring both 30-inch and 36-inch segments.
Borger Express Pipeline
Spanning 195 miles, this pipeline was completed in 2023 by Navigator Energy Services.
It transports 90,000 b/d of crude oil from Major County, Oklahoma, to Hutchinson County, Texas, and plays a critical role in facilitating the efficient movement of crude oil between states.
Seminole Red Pipeline Conversion
Originally an HGL pipeline, the Seminole Red pipeline was converted to crude oil transport in 2019.
In 2024, it was reconverted back to an HGL pipeline by Enterprise Products Partners.
This conversion is part of a larger project that includes the Bahia Pipeline, enhancing the capacity to transport HGL from the Permian Basin.
Current and future Pipeline Projects
The updated database tracks more than 270 pipeline projects, including 9 newly announced and 10 currently under construction.
Since its inception in 2010, 231 pipeline projects have been successfully completed, while 17 were permanently canceled.
These projects span various types, from new construction to expansions, reversals, and conversions, covering crude oil, HGL, and petroleum products.
The database offers detailed insights, from project capacity and geography to construction status and timelines.
With regular updates based on pipeline company announcements, government documents, and industry reports, it provides an essential tool for understanding the ongoing developments in the U.S. pipeline network.
While some projects are interconnected and share capacities, the database carefully tracks each pipeline to avoid overestimating total capacity. This level of precision ensures stakeholders can make informed decisions based on accurate data.
